Layer Cake Links Quilt

Happy weekend and thanks for dropping by because today we’re talking all about the Layer Cake Links Quilt, a free pattern download from the Fat Quarter Shop. Be sure to stop by the FQS Jolly Jabber blog to see the tutorial and video for this block!

I know things have been quiet on the blog and social media from my small corner of the world, but I want to clarify that the quieter it is over here, the more sewing and work I am getting done! This is one of those projects I’ve been doing.

The Layer Cake Links Quilt is AWESOME – so fast! It’s made with one solid Layer Cake and one patterned Layer Cake. The Fat Quarter Shop has a Layer Cake Links Quilt Kit and matching Backing Set, or you can choose your own fabrics, as I did here.

I used Little Tree by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics for my print, solid and binding fabrics. The fabric for the applique letters is Moda Bella Solids Aqua 9900-34. Instead of purchasing a solid layer cake, I chose yardage from the Little Tree fabrics. This allowed me the option of cutting one long strip to make an applique background and 10″ solid blocks from the remaining piece.

I use the Perfect 10 ruler, a lot. Not just in this quilt, but all the time. It’s easy to read, without a lot of extra markings on it.

The simplified marking makes it quicker and easier to read when sub-cutting the layer cakes into pieces to be reassembled into blocks.

First, we make all the blocks above, then we start cutting again!

The ruler makes quick work of all this cutting!

I need a bigger design board. Crazy, considering I just doubled the size of it last year. In truth, I need a bigger wall to put the design board on!

For the most part, I tried to arrange my blocks in diagonal rows of color. Surprisingly, it about worked with only a little fudging in one corner.

I wanted to add the Little Tree panel for the backing on my quilt. To do so, the front needed to be longer, but I didn’t have enough layer cake fabric to add another row of blocks. So I improvised and added a strip of applique.

Once everything was together, I was very happy with the results!
