Snapshots Quilt-Along Mini Quilt Block 6
Oh my gosh! We are halfway through this quilt, quilt(s), if you’re doing the full size and mini versions. I have to say, though, having been really focusing on cutting sugar, carbs, and processed foods from my diet and losing 35 pounds since February, staring at a giant ice cream sundae forming on my sewing machine was difficult. I’m a very visual person. I see food I like, I want to eat it. Factor in that I’m a complete ice cream fanatic, and it was difficult to stay focused on good eating habits. Plus, I cleaned up my quilt wall, so I got to look at the cake block again from Block 1.
Not sure if you noticed, in the first picture, but I chose stripes for my sundae dish and decided to embellish with some ric rac. Picking out a size and color took me much longer than adding it to the block, especially since I chose white first, then ended up ripping it off and changing to a deep aqua instead.
I’m not sure how everyone else likes to add ric rac, and if you have suggestions please add them to the comments, because I love getting ideas from other people. I kind of cheat, because rather than sewing the ric rac in place, I use ¼” iron-on adhesive to position it.
Next, I align the ric rac using a ruler to eyeball where my quarter inch seam is going to be and how much ric rac will be left on the block.
Once I like the way it looks, I iron it in place, then flip the block over so I can trim it even with the edge of the block, then continue with the instructions as written.
I’m also thinking about adding a button at the top where the cherry is located on the sundae. Not sure who else collects buttons, but you would think I could find a red button that I like to put on the block. Nope. None of these will do. I’ll keep looking!

Hi Millie! I am releasing the camera today as part of the backing!! The bike won’t be released until August, and I believe the hot air balloon releases tomorrow, so I will be working on it’s mini version this week. Lots to come this week for our minis – backing, camera, hot air balloon, finishing instructions…lots of sewing to do!
I also use adhesive for my ric-rac, but I use a thin line of Elmer’s glue! It’s SO much faster than having to cut and iron-on the adhesive, AND THEN iron the ric-rac onto a block – you just do it in one step with the Elmer’s! Absolutely LOVING these minis, and I can’t thank you enough for taking the time, effort and beautiful photographs of the process. I’m so excited to have found your blog (although I’m late to the party). I followed along with FQS’s quilt, and LOVED making it, but it’s quite time-consuming. I’m incredibly excited to try the mini!!! Many, many thanks for all your work!
I love this idea! I know Elmer’s is washable and dries clear, so it probably would be so much quicker. I’m going to try this out on some pin cushions I’m making. I don’t have any other current projects going that I could incorporate ric-rac into at the moment, and I want to try it now before I forget. Thank you so much for all your feedback! I have loved making the minis (and now I’m doing the “Big Blocks”), but I must admit it wouldn’t be nearly as fun doing them alone. I really like seeing what everyone else makes and posts on social media.
