Patchwork Quilt Along Big & Small Block 5

PWQAL Big and Small Block 5 │ Out of the Blue Quilts by Sondra Davison

Welcome to Month 5 of the Patchwork Quilt Along Big & Small. I know I say this every month, but seriously….where is this year going?! I remember my dad making this little quote to me long ago, and rarely a day passes that I don’t have it popping into my head:

For every item I cross off the top of my to do list, I add two more to the bottom.

~  Larry Williams (dad)

Today I’m giving you some sneak previews of my Big Block quilt in progress.  I’ve been experimenting with different sashings, and I love how this is coming together. I don’t do many pieced sashings. By the time I’m nearing the end of a quilt, I get in a hurry and go with solid strips of fabric.  When we near the end of the quilt along, I will share ideas to finish the Big Blocks into a quilt.    #lovemyninepatchcornerstones

If you remember my post about Block 3, I wrote about using bigger print fabrics in blocks that had fewer, but larger pieces in them. This Homestead Block was perfect for that. My print  fabric is Handmade by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics. It was part of a fat-eighth packet that I’ve been using from that was included in my October 2016 Sew Sampler box from the Fat Quarter Shop, which I believe there are some still available.

Here is your Big Block for Month 5. Click the PDF link under the picture to open, download and print the file. I had been using Dropbox to store these, but I’m switching back to a direct download. The Dropbox method was confusing some people, but I had started to use it because often when a website has “updates,” it sometimes loses links to files. Grrrr! I am unaware of this unless you email me or leave or comment, so always do so if you encounter a problem so I can fix it and thank you in advance!

Each month during 2017, Fat Quarter Shop will post a new free pattern and video tutorial for the Patchwork Quilt and encourage participants to donate to Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas in lieu of payments. Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics will each match up to $10,000 of the donations raised. Check out the blogs every month of our quilty friends. Watch their process, and see what fun fabric collections they have selected!

*Psst! The designers of the quilt’s fabrics – Bonnie & Camille – are sewing along, too! Fun!

  1. I think it is great that you are posting the information for the big blocks, however; with the blue print it is so dim, I cannot read it and because of the large heading, the bottom of the page is cut off when I tried printing it. I am only trying to be informative and I hope that this will not be offensive in any way.
Thanks and have a great day!

    1. Not offensive at all! I love feedback, and always want to help. Every printer is different, so what prints well on mine doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, as is the case here. I will email you a smaller version and see if that works for you. Also, you might try printing again from the download, but this time, attempt to print in black and white, since your color isn’t printing as saturated in color as my Xerox, and also see if your printer has an option to “scale” and, if so, “scale to fit printable area” or something to that effect, and that will make it fit on the page. Check your email and I’ll be sending to you! Thanks for letting me know!

  2. Will try to print as per your instructions. Thanks for the smaller version but it was not my intention for you to do anything special for me, just wanted you to know the problem I was having in case others may be having the same problem. Thanks for all you do! Have a great day!
