2020 Bloom-Topia Quilt Along – Release 7

Happy May Day, quilty friends! I’m totally crushing on Release 7 of Fat Quarter Shop’s 2020 Bloom-Topia Quilt Along and can’t wait to share my blocks with you!

This release includes two blocks, including the smaller one which is simply and aptly named “Geese Block,” and the really, really large one (18½” x 30½”) named Geese and Gander. I love all the colors and how these came out!

Preparing Materials

using alphabitties to organize quilt blocks

As always, I precut all my fabrics and labeled everything with my Alphabitties. We’re using Fat Quarter Shop’s Triangle Papers to make the flying geese, so I precut and added them to my project.

strip piecing is a favorite Speedy 8 quilt method

I’m always changing things out on pattern instructions, and this release was no different. I have about eight tried and true methods I use in quilting and one of them is strip-piecing units, then sub-cutting them into required block pieces. It saves time and improves my accuracy.

I used that method for the Nine Patch block units.

Bonus Blocks from Snowballs

As always, I had to make some HST bonus blocks. It’s a bit hard to see my stitch line in the picture below, but in addition to sewing the required diagonal line, I sew a second line in the excess that would normally be thrown away.

Next, I trim in between the sewn lines.

…and my finished Geese and Gander block. I was very tempted to put a border or two on this and use it, as is, for a table topper!

All About the Bloom-Topia Quilt Along

Starting February 1, 2020, Fat Quarter Shop releases two patterns each month for six months on their blog. Simply follow along to know when the patterns are posted! FQS will also be filming free complementary videos for each pattern.

With all our help, we can reach the goal of $30,000 in donations towards Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas! With each donation, we’re getting closer to the goal of granting FIVE wishes, and closer to releasing a new finishing pattern.

Just a reminder that this year’s QAL benefits Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas. Fat Quarter Shop offers all of the patterns for free, but offers the opportunity to make a $5 donation per pattern download to support Make-A-Wish. All proceeds from the pattern downloads will be donated to Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas, with Moda Fabrics partnering along. To learn more about the cause you can view this Make-A-Wish video.
