2019 Charity Quilt Along
Welcome to my stop on the 2019 Threadology Quilt Along by the Fat Quarter Shop! I’ve had so much fun making these first blocks, but before I go into anymore detail about them, let’s talk about what this quilt along is all about.
This year’s QAL benefits Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas. Threadology Block 1 – Ohio Star
Earlier this week I showed you my Threadology kit from Fat Quarter Shop. I thought I’d give you an inside look at my process when starting a quilt, because the first thing I do is label all my fabric.
It might seem like a bit of overkill doing this, but I can’t count the number of times I’ve used an unplanned fabric (or cut a kit wrong) because I didn’t label things.
Once I’m ready to start on a particular block, it’s easy to look at the fabrics called out for in the instructions, pull JUST those fabrics from my pile, then commence cutting.
Rather than follow the printed instructions to make these hourglass blocks, I followed the method shown here in FQS’s Block 1 video tutorial. I also chose not to press in one direction, instead “spinning” my seams as shown above. FQS has another great video tutorial showing that technique.
One nice extra, in my personal opinion, is that a lot of these blocks are oversized. I love that, since I tend to sew all my blocks a wee bit smaller than they should be. Don’t ask me how. They start out fine and shrink with every seam I add! With all the squaring up to be done, I found the main rulers I used making these blocks were my FQS Perfect 10 ruler, my Bloc-Loc rulers, and a small Omnigrid 4-inch ruler.
I had to laugh when I looked at this pile after squaring up blocks. I think “Little Snippets” is a perfect name for this fabric line by Bonnie & Camille for Moda!
I’ve started having lots of help in my sewing room these days. Meet Pepper. If you follow me on Instagram, you see her popping up occasionally. There is a strict “no cats” rule in the sewing room. She has a total disregard for rules. On a side note, on the wall behind her you’ll see the beginnings of a NICU quilt I’m making. Inspired by today’s Ohio Star blocks, I figured a way to make four blocks super fast, using my Speedy 8 method. I hope to finish the quilt in the next day or so and will share it with you next week!
And here are my final blocks! I love, love, LOVE this fabric line. It just makes me happy. A few more pics to share….
