2020 Bloom-Topia Quilt Along – Release 10
Welcome back to the Fat Quarter Shop 2020 Charity Quilt Along, Bloom-Topia!
This final block, the Richmond Block, uses Half-Square Triangles and Four Patch Units and measures 18½” square!
Preparing Materials
If you’re following along, you’ll see that I deviated a bit from the original cutting instructions for pieces E and F. I chose to use a strip piece method for my four-patch blocks, as it always improves my accuracy in matching seams.
1. Cut and sew strips
Instead of cutting 16 squares total for Units E and F, I chose to cut one strip for each, measuring 2⅝” x 21″, then sew the strips together on the length.
2. Subcut strips
Next, subcut your strips into block units. measuring 2⅝” x 4¾”.
Make eight two-patch units. Having a small ruler is handy for this process. I am using the Creative Grids Quilt 3.5″ x 6.5″ Ruler.
Assemble blocks
After making your subcuts, assemble the pieces into 4-patch blocks, following the original instructions, then add your outer white triangles.
Having a 6½” ruler is great to square the block to the exact size.
I make sure I have a ¼” surrounding each point of the 4-patch center, then cut the excess on all four sides.
From this point, I followed the rest of the pattern instructions as written.
If you’re not already, follow the Bloom-Topia Quilt Along web page which includes this and all the patterns, as well as video tutorials.
All About the Bloom-Topia Quilt Along
Starting February 1, 2020, Fat Quarter Shop releases two patterns each month for six months on their blog. Simply follow along to know when the patterns are posted! FQS will also be filming free complementary videos for each pattern.
With all our help, we can reach the goal of $30,000 in donations towards Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas! With each donation, we’re getting closer to the goal of granting FIVE wishes, and closer to releasing a new finishing pattern.
Just a reminder that this year’s QAL benefits Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas. Fat Quarter Shop offers all of the patterns for free, but offers the opportunity to make a $5 donation per pattern download to support Make-A-Wish. All proceeds from the pattern downloads will be donated to Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas, with Moda Fabrics partnering along. To learn more about the cause you can view this Make-A-Wish video.
