My Story

Sometimes the best ideas hit us from out of the blue, like wanting to quilt! Welcome to Out of the Blue, a quilting lifestyle blog dedicated to providing tutorials, advice, fun and laughter to busy folks with creative streaks. Here, you will find projects and ideas to fit those busy schedules, along with time and money-saving tips and techniques. Yes, there is a balance between our creative and work/home lives, and I’m here to help you find it!

Hey everyone, I’m Sondra –
the quilter/wife/blogger behind this screen. I live in Kansas with my husband, Cary, and our anywhere from 8-10 rescue cats, depending on the day of the week and if it’s meal time.

I’m an avid quilter, and crazy nuts about nearly any form of DIY, including cross stitch, embroidery, painting, fixer-upper projects, and anything that involves power tools!

I started designing patterns in 2003, and over the years I’ve developed a focus on strip piecing, quilt as you sew, and other time-saving techniques.  During college, I double majored in Education and Mass Communications with an emphasis in Journalism, never dreaming I would one day apply that education to pattern writing and design, along with teaching in the quilting community.

In addition to Out of the Blue, for several years I worked as a Quality and Process Improvement manager for a global aerospace company. While I enjoyed working with literally hundreds of coworkers and meeting thousands of people over the years, not to mention learning so much about streamlining workflows (which I now use in my own business and quilting practices), there is a real joy in working online, sometimes in my PJs, and meeting so many people from all over the world through this computer screen.

So…I think we should be friends… and you should probably like cats.

I’d love to hear from you…send me an email me, Tweet me, find me on Instagram, Facebook and/or Pinterest…whatever you want…I’m here to chat!
