Hi there, nice to meet you!
I’m Sondra, and Out of the Blue is my corner of the internet.
I’m the voice, quilter, designer and teacher behind Out of the Blue. I create quilt and sewing projects, take photos of them, write the instructions, then organize it all into patterns and tutorials. Soon, I’ll be offering online classes because learning and sewing together is always fun!
I live in the Midwest USA and have an unhealthy obsession with all things cotton, coffee, chocolate, and cats (a mixture of rescued fur babies with the occasional foster kitten thrown in for good measure).
My patterns…
My website reflects my philosophy on quilting, a heartfelt mindset developed over years of overcoming the opposite. Quilting should include these characteristics: Fun • Fast • Finished.
Fast projects for busy weekends or any time.
Fun new ideas and fresh takes on favorites to shortcut preparation time, cut down on cost (UFOs) and create quilted projects with style.
Finished, because starting the next project (which we all love to do!) always feels better without the guilt of an ever-growing WIP (work in progress) pile.
My patterns are cost conscious, trying to minimize time and fabric waste and most can be made with just one or two basic rulers for cutting. Even though I love to buy every gadget out there, I find myself using the same few items over and over, so that’s how I teach others to do.
Occasionally, I may find a can’t live without it tool when working on a project and will share it with you, but only when I really think it’s worth it.
Out of the Blue patterns are designed to be finished fast. I use fun repeatable techniques that, once learned, can be used over and over again. Techniques such as Speedy 8 (S8) Half Square Triangles, Quilt-As-You-Sew (QAYS) assembly, and strip-pieced block assembly, are just a few I want to teach you.
And…most my sales go toward feeding a lot of homeless, rescue fur babies that make their home with us!
